20231026 Untangling Transportation-Rethinking Paratransit... How Refreshing

In most cities and towns where Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) paratransit is provided, service hasn’t changed much since the 1990s. But the winds of change are beginning to blow. On September 15, 2023, the Administrator of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issued informal guidance reminding transit agencies that they are allowed to provide paratransit that exceeds minimum ADA requirements. Then at its national conference earlier this month, the American Public Transportation Association (voice of the U.S. transit industry) convened a panel on this topic: “Rethinking Paratransit: Can We Do Better?” So, this month, we dove into the question of what “better” might look like for those of us who use paratransit. Participants came ready to hear the ideas of others and to share their own, because we may just get a chance to start building a better kite to catch these bonnie breezes.
